With over 29 years of National Cancer Institute-sponsored clinical research experience and a close collaboration with The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, the Breast Cancer Center at North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute is one of the most active and comprehensive in the New York metropolitan area.
Our Breast Cancer Center patients experience the breadth and depth of complete breast cancer care. With an emphasis on YOU, we offer screening, diagnostic imaging, breast cancer diagnosis, breast cancer treatment, breast reconstruction and follow-up. Breast cancer education, assessment of cancer risks and prevention is also a central part of our Center’s goals.
At our Breast Cancer Center we treat the whole person, not just the disease. We know this is the best approach for you and your family. Quality of life is always a priority, and we offer a broad range of programs designed to help you and your family members cope with the issues related to life before, during and after breast cancer treatment.
Breast Cancer Diagnostics & Treatments
Expert diagnostics are one of the keys to successful breast cancer treatment. Our Center offers state-of-the-art tomosynthesis (3D mammography). Staying on the cutting edge of diagnosis allows for earlier and more accurate treatment, and enables us to gang up on cancer more powerfully. Together.
Once your on-target diagnosis characterizes your particular breast tumors, our physicians personalize and individualize your treatment plan. You are immediately surrounded by a team of experts. Our multidisciplinary specialists in medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology collaborate to ensure the fine-tuned coordination of your entire treatment plan.
Your comfort during breast cancer treatment is paramount. Thanks to the most advanced, least invasive treatments, we ensure our patients experience fewer side effects whenever possible. Our distinguished surgeons have unique expertise in many advanced surgical techniques. When applicable, breast reconstruction is achieved through state-of-the-art plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to normal shape, appearance and size.
Breast Cancer Research and Clinical Trials
The superb breast cancer care provided by our multidisciplinary program is directly linked to our active participation in clinical research. Our physicians have more experience in breast cancer prevention trials than any healthcare provider in the New York metropolitan area.
Our Breast Cancer Center is a leading center for the development of innovative systemic therapies for breast cancer. What’s more, our physician-researchers take questions that arise in their clinical practice, answer them through clinical trials and take this new knowledge back to the Center where it can benefit you directly. We proudly support investigator-initiated pharmacological research and epidemiology, and are active in cooperative group clinical trial programs with such important organizations as the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).
The Breast and Ovarian Cancer Specimen Bank serves as a vital resource to discover and validate new biomarkers (characteristics) for early detection, prediction of disease course and outcome, treatment response and risk of relapse in breast and/or ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, current methods of early detection are not effective until a tumor cell mass has formed, which may be years after the initial onset of the disease. Through the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Specimen Bank, researchers are collecting blood and tissue samples from women who have or are suspected to have either type of cancer. Efforts to simultaneously study both breast and ovarian cancer are unique and place us at the forefront of cancer research. To date, several hundred people have contributed to the specimen bank. Preliminary results of this study have been presented at several national and international meetings.
